Shaping the apple trees

Neil and Jill have started training the 4 apple trees around the well in the centre of the kitchen garden – they should make a lovely sight. Next up, espaliering the trees along the top edge of the garden. Excitingly, for the first time, the peach, nectarine, apricot and fig trees on the east facing wall have got a decent amount of fruit set on them – they have enjoyed the spring warmth and perhaps have just reached sufficient maturity to fruit?

It was a cold day for volunteers, but tackling the baked hard ground and strimming to remove weeds kept them warm and you could see where they had been working! In the kitchen garden, soil preparation lead to the planting out of the first courgettes and beans. Meanwhile, in the Japanese style garden, volunteers are creating a bamboo fence around the Ying Yang feature.
